Delmarva residents have easy access to a host of fabulous weekend getaways, both in their respective states and the surrounding areas. The Delmarva Peninsula is a large peninsula on the East Coast of the United States, occupied by the vast majority of the state of Delaware and parts of the Eastern Shore regions of Maryland and Virginia. Eastern Shore
The Eastern Shore is the eastern side of the Chesapeake Bay, and it includes parts of Maryland and Virginia. It's home to sandy beaches, gorgeous natural areas, and numerous charming towns. The region is characterized by tiny historic towns, meandering creeks, beautiful natural areas, great seafood, and lots of opportunities for outdoor recreation. Maryland's Eastern Shore is connected to the rest of the state by the Bay Bridge, which crosses 4.5 miles of the Bay between Annapolis and Kent Island. When visiting, be sure to indulge in blue crabs. They can be found on the menu at many of the area’s restaurants as they are the state’s crustacean.
Ocean City
Probably one of the best known Eastern Shore destinations are the beaches of Ocean City, Maryland. Ocean City is a popular summer destination, with its three-mile-long boardwalk sitting at its tip. The town dates back to 1902 and offers games, rides, eateries, and shops. As for food, of course fresh seafood is a given but OC is also popular for its salt water taffy and french fries from Thrasher’s. Lodging includes a mix of the charming, iconic, and modern options to choose from including campsites for the outdoorsman. There are many other things to do here too, including outdoor movies, Beach Olympics, and free concerts on Wednesday evenings in July and August.
Assateague Island National Seashore
Assateague Island National Seashore in Berlin, Maryland is located just off the Maryland and Virginia coast. This barrier island features sandy beaches, forests, coastal bays, and salt marshes. Many visitors come to see the wild horses that roam the beach. The horses are split into two main herds, one on the Virginia side and one on the Maryland side of Assateague. Visitors are also able to enjoy the campgrounds on the Maryland side of the island with the National Park Service. Here you will find the most rugged and scenic sites at the edge of the bay and the Atlantic. This cool destination is about 20 minutes away from Ocean City and a featured residential community, Ocean Pines.
Deep Creek Lake
Deep Creek Lake has something for everyone no matter what season it is! Located in the mountains of western Maryland, this coveted destination by locals is just a few hours away from Baltimore. With 3,900 acres of water and 65 miles of shoreline, Deep Creek Lake is ideal for summertime activities like boating, kayaking, fishing, and hiking. In the winter it’s popular for winter sports like cross-country and downhill skiing. Deep Creek Lake and Garrett County have also been consistently ranked as the #1 place to view fall foliage and offer popular events like the Autumn Glory Festival in October. Lodging options include cabins by the lake or one of the hotels or condos nearby.
Annapolis
Maryland’s state capital is ideal for those who want to enjoy time out on the water. Located about an hour from Baltimore this city has been called the sailing capital of the world. Take a cue from the locals and get out on the water by boat, paddle board or kayak. The 533 miles of shoreline includes coves, creeks, rivers, streams, and the Chesapeake Bay. On land, major attractions to see are the United States Naval Academy and the Market House at City Dock. Visitors can take a walking tour of the Naval Academy to discover its rich history. Afterwards, head to the Market House at City Dock in the harbor area for an unforgettable dining experience!

Milton
If visiting a quaint town is on your list of things to do this summer then Milton, DE is the place for you! Situated close to the Delaware Bay and on the Broadkill River, Milton has over 200 historical buildings to admire and explore. After you’ve finished strolling through Milton’s Historic District to capture the beauty of the historic buildings, stop by the Dogfish Head Brewery for a tour. Enjoy a sampling of their craft beer and then grab a 6 pack from the gift shop to take home.
Rehoboth Beach
Take a quick trip to Rehoboth Beach! Only 2-3 hours from Maryland, this is a great alternative to Ocean City if you’re looking for a new beach to explore. This beach town comes alive with crowds during the summer months, but it’s a great getaway throughout the year. Soak up the sun on the beach while surfing the waves, dolphin watching, or on a pontoon boat excursion! Enjoy a stroll on the boardwalk to people watch and enjoy shopping at the local stores. Be sure to sample the many options of coastal cuisine available. Local tip: try visiting at the end of October for the Sea Witch Festival, and take part in all of the family fun with live music, vendors, and activities.
Bethany Beach
For a low-key beach experience take a ride to Bethany Beach. Bethany is the kind of place that's perfectly suited to beach-house gatherings of extended families, who find their sunny days filled with an endless array of do-as-you-please activities. This is a great location for its balance of family-friendly peacefulness and fun-loving diversions. Visit the Freeman Arts Pavillion and Captain Jack’s Pirate Golf for some family fun. Or go to Fenwick State Park for an outdoor adventure. Don’t forget all shopping in Delaware is tax-free so definitely do a little shopping too! This relaxing destination is less than 20 minutes away from The Salt Pond, a featured residential community.
Lewes
If you enjoy learning about a town’s history this is a great location to check out. Officially the First Town in the First State since it was the original settlement of the Dutch, Lewes is a quiet and charming town in Delaware. This historic location offers visitors quiet strolls on boutique-filled streets and relaxing waterfront dining. One of the most popular destinations is Cape Henlopen State Park, which is home to beautiful beaches, miles of trails and a campground. For a unique view of the coastline climb to the top of the WWII observation towers. To learn more about the town’s history visit the Lewes Historical Society Main Campus or Zwaanendael Museum.
Dover
Finally, visit the capital of Delaware for another historic experience! Dover not only offers history and culture but also some night life fun. Enjoy a night of gambling at Bally’s Dover Casino Resort or a beer tasting at one of our local craft breweries. The renowned Motor Speedway is also here for the NASCAR fans. During the day take a tour of the seat of government during Colonial times when you stop by the Old State House. It’s a great place to learn about the state’s history. The Governor's House is another great spot to visit. Music lovers may also want to check out the Firefly Music Festival that takes place each year in the fall.
